Okanagan ELN Spring Meeting

The Okanagan Mainline Early Literacy Network group wrapped up their year on Friday, June 10th with a visit from Dr. Leyton Schnellert.  For those of you who have not yet have the pleasure of meeting Leyton, on paper he is a professor and researcher at UBC Okanagan, is a well-respected author, and he co-chairs the BC Rural Education Advisory.  If you have met him, however, you are already friends!

Leyton shared with our group his latest book, Developing Self-Regulating Learners, which he co-wrote with Deb Butler and Nancy Perry.  After laying a foundation of the Nature of Learning (Dumont et al, 2012) and the building blocks for innovative learning, Leyton went on to describe how self-regulating learning is 'active' and strategic learning.  Teachers have an important role to play in a child's development of self-regulating learning in both independent and social situations.  Although we got just a taste of what's in the book, the hum in the room after Leyton spoke gave me an idea of just how powerful and timely his message was.

As part of our group share, Donna Kozak (SD 23's Early Learning and Literacy Co-coordinator) extended the invitation to their district's Early Learning Summer Institute.  The topics include:
Considering the layers of inquiry-based learning: Transforming education practice
The third educator: Transforming your learning environment into a space of possibilities with Joanne Babalis   http://myclassroomtransformation.blogspot.ca/
